The next freshwater Chondrichthyan that The Fins United Initiative wants to introduce you is Amanda’s river stingray (Potamotrygon amandae). In the Potamotrygonidae (River stingrays) family, the Greek words “potamos” and “trygon” mean ‘river’ and ‘a sting ray’ respectively. Named for Amanda Lucas Gimeno, hence amandae, they are known from the Paraná-Paraguay basin in South America.
TFUI Founder Melissa C. Marquez is author of all animal bios and "Behind the Fins" segments.
