Ever heard of the Bullnose Ray (Myliobatis freminvillii)? No? Don’t feel bad – you aren’t the only one! This is a little-known eagle ray with a wide distribution across the western Atlantic ocean all the way from Cape Cod down to Argentina. If you live in certain parts of the western central Atlantic ocean, you may not have this critter call your waters home, though.
TFUI Founder Melissa has a soft spot for roughsharks… just because they are so unique in their looks. The Caribbean roughshark, Oxynotus caribbaeus, is no exception to this. It’s a rare, small, deepwater benthic shark that has been recorded from the Gulf of Mexico, Honduras and Venezuela.
The yellow stingray (Urobatis jamaicensis) has a special place in TFUI founder Melissa’s heart… mainly because it was the first (and only) stingray she has ever held in her hands! If she was able to hold it, that means it must be small… and it is! They only get up to 36 cm wide (called disc width).
TFUI Founder Melissa C. Marquez is author of all animal bios and "Behind the Fins" segments.
