College is different for every person, even if they are in the same field. The #ASKTFUI series follows our officers who are in college, have recently graduated, or are in graduate school answer some questions regarding organization.
Name: JadeAnn Hemberger
Education: Currently getting degree in Marine Biology (undergraduate)
How do you start your day?
I start out my day with coconut water or green tea and some fruit and yogurt. Then I check out my social media to see what's new in the marine science world. (Pro-tip: once you find a career you like follow as many people working in that field as you can! Who knows they may be your future boss or coworker someday!)
What is the best way to stay organized on a tight schedule?
I write everything down in a planner and my calander! I also keep my calendar connected to my phone and laptop so I get alerts for important things.
What is one organizational item can you not live without?
I can't live without colored pens! All my scheduling is color corridinated ie. Green for Herpetology. It really helps me stay on top of what is needed to be done for what class plus my calander looks like a rainbow!
What do you do to stay focused on your work (i.e. what distractions do you get rid of)?
Put your phone on airplane mode when you study! That is always my biggest distraction. It's always good to make sure you have a great study group too that will help you out. Don't just study with someone because they are smart as they may take control of everything and not stop to make sure you understand it.
What apps or programs do you use to stay on task?
I have apps that send me daily study tips like Oceanography by edutainment and an app for my Canvas account for school so I can see everything for my classes, internships, and volunteering.
What is your advice to someone still in high school?
Don't rush into a major you aren't sure of! Not everyone knows what they want to do in life once they graduate and that is not a bad thing. It can be overwhelming to be 18 and already having to plan out your entire life. If you can't decide on a major stay undecided and take some classes that interests you. If you are undecided about school start working at a few places or take time off to travel. Do whatever you think is right just as long as you are happy!
