A Peek into College Life: CS

2/9/2016

College is different for every person, even if they are in the same field. The #ASKTFUI series follows our officers who are in college, have recently graduated, or are in graduate school answer some questions regarding organization.

Education:

How do you start your day?

During college, I liked to start my day with a good breakfast and a workout. I made it a priority to stay physically active and it made the most sense to workout in the morning so I could start the day fresh and energized!

What is the best way to stay organized on a tight schedule?

I stay organized by writing things down and making lists. This allows me to develop a plan of attack and start crossing things off right away, which is a satisfying feeling.

What is one organizational item can you not live without?

A calendar is my most useful organizational tool. Whether its a daily planner, drawn on a whiteboard, or even digital on my phone or computer, calendars help me visualize and sort out when I can get all of my work done and balance that time with the rest of my life.

What do you do to stay focused on your work (i.e. what distractions do you get rid of)?

Not all distractions are bad in my opinion. For example, music is a useful distraction for me. It actually distracts me from other distractions, like people talking. I think you need to find out what works for you and be honest with yourself if you are being distracted by your music, phone, etc. and be able to change your environment so that you can stay focused.

What apps or programs do you use to stay on task?

To stay on task I tend to write everything down on paper (instead of using an app) because it helps me clear my head and see everything written down.

What is your advice to someone still in high school?

My advice to someone in high school would be to create a few life goals. It is hard to develop a plan about the future, if at all, in high school and I had no idea what I wanted to do. If you set goals and at least have some general ideas about your future they could help guide you to meeting the right people and doing the right things.
